I was asked to look at Parada (Kucia, 1986) and Man with a Movie Camera (Vertov, 1929) to see which features particularly inspire me for my MA major project.

Still of wheel close-up from Parada

The parts from Parada I find particularly inspirational are close-up shots such as the wheel above, repetitive sequences and the use of rotoscoping. I convey these features in my film such as planning a close up of my hand covering my ear in response to the businessman beside me talikng on his mobile phone very loudly that leads to a shot of phones covering the whole screen, the use of rotoscoping and repetition of the close-up shots. I also liked the addition of the old-fashioned film grain effect despite the film having been made in 1986.

Man with a Movie Camera

This is a documentary where "a man travels around a city with a camera slung over his shoulder, documenting urban life with dazzling invention (Gregersen, c. 2016)." The film has the effective establishing shot of a large camera with the man and his camera standing on top of it. Like Parada this film uses repetition of close-up shots and I also like the use of pixilation for the chairs moving downwards although I am using a combination of cut-out animation and rotoscoping in my work. I also found the documentary technique of this film inspirational for my own work.
