On 18th February 2016, BA and MA film and Animation students participated in their Celebration Week event. Two critics were from film and two were from animation. They were film critic Munsur Ali, James Merry from the animation comapny Squint/Opera and Marc Boothe from B3 Media.

BA animation students were first. Level 4 (first years) looked at genre and music that fits specific genres.

Mark Collington introduces the Level 4 Animation students.

One film from which clips were shown was Peter and the Wolf (2006).

They made cut-out puppets from images they found on the Internet. I did something similar with my BA project using images cut out from newspapers, magazines and photographs and I intend to use a similar technique in my MA work. They used projection mapping to split the screen.

They made a film based on the story of Rapunzel.

Presentation from third year (Level 6) film students.

They talked about We Make Film and said it was on social media.

A showreel of their work was shown. Work included short films and music videos.

Level 5 (second year) film students - Studio 3: Flashback. They showed a selection of experimental teaser work. The work appeared to be influenced by the Kuleshov effect.

Several clips from news channels were used.

Three different groups presented their work.

In The Bubble a woman lives in a bubble because she lost her son. The film is intended for ages 16 and above. Students discussed the plot, equipment, locations and character breakdown.

Destination is a coming of age story about following a young boy named David throughout his life. David is shown at various ages by changing his look throughout because the students found it difficult to find actors of different ages. Inspirations for this project included Boyhood and The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

The third film is called Goodbye Sunrise. It is about a young man who loses his sight by being hit by a cricket ball. Locations, characters, tone and shooting time were discussed.bA lot of research was done on blindness.

A lot of sound is used to make the film appeal to both the blind and those who are not blind. The teaser is on YouTube. Its title card resembles an eye test sheet and if mostly consists of a black screen with music and sound played over it.

More work from Level 5 film students (Growing Up Studio) was shown.

Another showreel was shown. It appeared to include animated effects and used wildlife footage as well as clips from student films, The Railway Children (1970) and The Wizard of Oz (1939). The found footage made James Merry suggest the students use more original footage. One work shown was an experimental essay film similar to the one I made.

One film is called The Landlady. it is about a landlady who moves in a new flat where ghosts also reside.

Last Supper/Night Out is about a woman whose meal out with friends is interrupted by a brutal event.

More Than Money - a man tries helping out the person who mugged him.

Animation students from level 5, level 6 (third year) and level 7 (MA) showed their work.

Emeka gave a presentation on the vertical studio work as well as his own idea.

Ruby showed a previous compositing piece.

Prateek showed work he made for an existing company as well as the Christmas projection work onto the model of Surbiton Station; the work on the actual station in November 2014; and work with the architecture students.

I presented my idea about my animated documentary The Five Senses of Asperger Syndrome. The critics gave me generally positive feedback on my idea, particularly James who thought my experiences of taste reminded James of Remy in Ratatouille experiencing taste himself. I aslo recalled when James visited my univeristy on another occasion and showed us his BA animation film about how he experienced his hearing impairment.
